A lot of times running off of the board is misunderstood.
It really means don't slow down.
You can run off of the board but you still have to jump.
I notice that the speed of her foot movement doesn't change as she nears the board.
The faster they move, the faster she will come off of the board and maintain horizontal velocity.

The next thing is projecting the hips forward, but that might be a bit advanced for her.
If she can it will set up her in the air position better for landing.
She is trying to land her jump well before she starts her downward path.

Gtrain said it all first.
Last note get her to move her hands faster, through a good range of motion, arm pump is to slow of a reactive force for long jumping.

Thanks all,

I'm taking all these points on board and will try to address some of them as time permits :-) As I feel that she is generally "not quick" but does seem to get plenty of height, we have not done anything really with her take off :-( But I can now see that she doesn't drop at all in last couple of strides and just "runs off" as you say.

We have actually done almost no LJ practice at all, as we have been more concerned with her best event the TJ and I understand they have slightly differing take offs.

We have decided to "drop" the HJ from training now, so that will give us more time for TJ/LJ and walks :-) We did HJ last night and unfortunately, she just can't get her head around the flop/back arch during the jump(even though she is so very flexible and soared over any height she couldn't flop at with a scissor jump). It has just gotten too frustrating for her (and me) to keep persisting with limited time remaining to States now !!

A good cue for high jump is have her put her chin to the shoulder opposite of the jump leg.

As far as long jump goes, too much height and not enough speed, means a short jump.
Part of why she is hoping forward after landing is becuase her body trajectory is straight downward.

The approach and the takeoff are different for triple and long jump.

It is not a matter of being quick but a matter of speeding up her foot speed as she gets closer to the board. Go on youtube and pull up some long jump video of american female jumpers and you will see the big slow down for foot speed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybEs3j_MmrA carl lewis, watch the deliberate downward drive of the hand versus pumping the arms.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiP64pFsd68&feature=related

The hands make you do wonderful things, but too many folks still teach pump the arms or run with the arms fixed at the elbow joint. such as these jumpers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaWzFprIOn0 Master the synchronization between the hand and the feet with the hands leading the way and great things will happen.

Gtrain,

It was a great night at OP last night wasn't it !

Have lots of LJ videos/vision to look at :-)
Gee, they NJ alot....and by a fair way too !
Did you like any of the tecniques better than others.
I liked the simple "floating ones" best.....Nofke (Ithink), the Japanise guy in black & liked the height of Fabrice :-) Would you say that alot of the hitchkicking etc... was just to stop over rotating or not (almost just looking for something to do while flying through the air !!!). Parav... looked like (as one of you guys had said before about Emma) he was in position too early for landing and ended up coming down from a height with legs much closer to vertical than horizontal :-(

What was your "take" on these matters

To be honest l didn't see a lot of the LJ. By the time l got there it was pretty packed. Found a great spot down near the finish line and claimed a few autographs as well. Wasn't game to move in case a lost the spot. Huge crowd.

Saw Scott Martin's record from side on. Knew it was big before it was halfway through.

Was lucky enough to stick around after everyone had gone and got a few photos. Hooker, Mottram, Lewis, Deakes, Wroe, Offerins, Martin as well as Seb Coe.

But my new screen saver is attached. I hope you like it.

Wilber Well done to Emma was she pleased with 5th position. It was a tough competition in extreme hot conditions. I remember her well as Im an ex Waverley athlete. Wilbur its great to see the Waverley spirit remains. I think Michael Harvey holds the record in doing the most events in one day. 10 I think. And that spirit stem back to the mid 70s when a lanky bloke from Oakleigh came to our Centre to help with coaching. This same fellow Roy Minshull has come to Shepp and making a difference here in the last couple of months. He's got me fired up to coaching again.

Gtrain: Well done for Ash, tough gig when first and second break the State record. 8 4 3 over the past 3 years, she has done really well particularly as she pulled up sore after the regions. Its been great to witness her development. My daughter was a rap for her support at the JDS camp

My daughter had a disappointing state with Triple. Thats largely my fault as we have done little specifics with TJ. But do find it difficult with a non supportive parent who wont allow her to train on days when she stays at her Mums. Its been a real juggling act. I also am reluctant to do too much on the run up at Shepp as its not to giving and Mic has gone through large growth spurts over last 2 years.

Mic is raw talent and we about to start a full year preparation for next year.
And see where we get. Any ideas and suggestions would be invaluable.

Any information on run up surfaces would be good (esp base). Centre has got a grant to put a rubber surface on top of existing. Wondering if that is a short term band aid fix or whether we ought to invest in a proper run up although we may not have the bucks.

We were very lucky with Ash. She has been carrying a sore thigh for the season (which has nothing to do with her thigh), which flared again at regionals and then forced her out of multis. She hurt it again in the 100m heats and was in some serious trouble during the LJ. She was pretty disappointed with her weekend as she knows what she would've been capable of, particularly coming off 5.25m at regionals for LJ (jumped 4.88 at State).

I am trying to convince her not to play netbal this year, or at least have a good break before starting. She should finish growing soon which will help.

So far as the run up goes for Shepp, can't help. The people who lay the tracks would have some good advice on what would be best. I would imagine laying a new surface would be better than going over the top, but not certain.

Time to start winter prep. Should be fun. A few different things to bring in.

Winter has been very good.

All injuries gone and work starting to pay good dividends. All testing suggests bigger, faster and stronger than any other time.

We tried to introduce different elements, such as tougher resistence work and plyo's. Even did alternative stuff like rock climbing.

Decided not to go to Nationals this year for various school and financial issues, so will keep harder training right through to late November/early December and then look at after the New Year for some comps and results. It has always been hard trying to be your best for a Nationals in early December and then still try to keep form through to March. I will be surprised to see what this year brings with the different training time periods.

Gtrain - My jumps group have been training for around 10 weeks already (many of those in the gym) and they are very much enjoying themselves :-) Three or 4 of them will be "having a crack" at the PSG selection trials in September, so yes, it is going to be very awkward to have them at their best in Sept, Dec, Feb & March :-(
Malc - She was very pleased with 5th but not so happy about LJ. Looking forward to an improved season starting soon :-)

First comp for the season and PB 11.09m (over 36 feet for the Yanks in the audience) for my 14yo female TJ.

Still in winter training mode(strength work and overall fitness). Doing 4 nights a week. 2 running (multiples of 100's, 150's and 200's @ 85% with low rec) and 2 circuits (1 body weight, other med ball). Sport on weekends thrown in there as well.

No nationals this year as school trip planned and trying a different tactic for this season (not peaking at the start of the season). Does anyone else hate having nationals halfway through the year!?!

Hope everyone else is going well with there athletes.
