| Forgive my ignorance - I'm very inexperienced. Should a kid who sprints for the track team be advised to run for the cross country team? I remember hearing something about distance running being bad for speed. Is distance running bad for a kid who is a top sprinter ? |

It's true that running xc will have an effect on speed. However, speed is something that can be gained relatively quickly. The strength gained from the extra km's will hold the body in good stead come the summer, making the speed even better.
When dealing with whether to get an athlete to do a xc season, it depends on a lot of factors. Timing of the season, what you want to focus on for the year, the time the athlete has in the off season (may have a different sport), technical issues, etc.
I don't have a problem with track athletes running xc, but it depends on the athlete. |

What are you trying to accomplish with any sprinter by having them run XC?
That information will help determine if it is a good or bad idea. |
